Overview
Set for its annual running along the neighborhood streets and subdivisions of this suburb of Chicago — which has been recognized as one of the country’s best places to live and raise a family by publications ranging from Frommer’s to U.S. News & World Report — the Lake Zurich Alpine Races features a half marathon, 5K and a one-mile race for kids.
Course details
Runners start the out-and-back course for the half marathon at the Barn in Paulus Park, which lies along the southwest corner of Lake Zurich, the lake from which this village of about 18,000 residents takes its name. From there, the course heads around the southern end of the lake and then into the neighborhoods between Summit Road and Old McHenry Road, and then between Old McHenry and North Fairfield Road. The course runs past the Lake Zurich Golf Club, Brierwood Park and Copperfield Park on its way toward the Copperfield neighborhood, where runners will make a loop around the subdivision and then start heading back along the route they’ve just run, back toward Lake Zurich. This occasionally hilly course has really only mild changes in elevation throughout, and runners finish the race back where they started, at the Barn in Paulus Park.
