In keeping with the Charlotte area’s NASCAR roots, the Novant Charlotte Marathon, Half Marathon and 5K offer the chance to run through one of the Southeast’s greenest, most scenic cities, on a race that starts with a green stock car racing flag and ends with a waving checkered flag. Formerly known as the Thunder Road Marathon & Half Marathon, the event was renamed the Charlotte Marathon & Half Marathon in 2016 to reflect the love of the city.
The course for the marathon is a point-to-point course in which the starting and finish lines are actually not far from one another, and which takes runners through the city streets of Charlotte past sights such as historic Myers Park and Bank of America Stadium, the home of the National Football League’s Carolina Panthers.Past participants describe the Charlotte Marathon 13.1-mile course as “rolling” and “hilly,” with a few moderate climbs in elevation as well as plenty of downhill stretches, with a flat finish.
The marathon course has a 6-hour time limit.
There will be 13 water stations for marathoners located approximately every two miles. Porta-Jons will be available at each water stop.
