Overview

McDowell Mountain Regional Park has over 50 miles of trails through beautiful desert scenery. This 21,099-acre regional park is located four miles north of Fountain Hills. Wildlife sightings are common; look for deer, javelina, coyotes and a multitude of bird species around the three ponds in the park. A couple of trails are less than a mile long; several are one to four miles; and the popular Pemberton Trail is 15.3 miles. Elevations rise from 1,600 feet to 3,000 feet at the base of the McDowell Mountains. The entire park faces the Four Peaks, Weaver’s Needle and Superstition Mountains and provides awesome views. Whether you’re going for a short stroll or looking for a challenge, you’ll enjoy the trails and the vistas. The Javelina Jundred will take place at the Pemberton Trailhead at McDowell Mountain Regional Park north of Fountain Hills, Arizona. The 100 Mile distance will be comprised of one loop that incorporates the Escondido Trail on the far East Side of the park and four full loops on the popular Pemberton, Shallmo, and Cinch Trails. The course is open and exposed with little to no shade. When the sun drops behind the McDowell Mountains, the temperatures can go from 80 degrees to 50 degrees within an hour, turning your sweat drenched clothing into a cooling suit.

Course details

The course will move to a five loop format with the start/finish area staged out of the Four Peaks Staging Area. Loop one will be 22.3 miles and include the Shallmo, Pemberton and Escondido Trails. Loops 2-5 will be identical at 19.4 miles including parts of the Cinch, Scenic, Pemberton and Shallmo Trails. Trails feature rolling single track through the Sonoran Desert. Run past giant Saguaro Cactus, granite boulders and dry wash-beds as you tour the most popular trail of McDowell Mountain Regional Park. Loops are run “washing machine” style, meaning each is reversed allowing you to keep an eye on the competition, see your friends and meet other runners all day and night. Each loop features a gentle 600 foot climb from the start/finish at Javelina Jeadquarters to the high point near the foothills of the McDowell Mountain range. The trail dips in and out of wash beds on the far side of the course before descending back to the start finish. The trail is a mix of hard packed granite, rocks and sand.
