Overview

The Upper Jock River Canoe Race is a fun and interesting 12+ kilometer canoe race run each April. The race has a long history dating back to 1971 when it was a down-river whitewater course run on the Lower Jock River. The current course on the Upper Jock is far tamer and many families and recreational paddlers use it as a first opportunity to get out on the water. The course runs though the beautiful Richmond fen which is a highly significant Ontario wet land.

Course details

Most of the course is quite shallow and there are several swifts or Class I rapids towards the end of the race, depending on the water level. There are generally no portages however there are usually some constricted areas in the fen where canoe traffic can bunch up. Current is a factor the entire distance so the end comes quickly but not too soon for some that are making it their season opener.
