Overview
The concept for the Halloween Half Marathon & Freaky 4-Miler was born in early 2009. We were looking for a unique “hook” to add into a traditional running event. We figured there were plenty of running events out there so we wanted to create a unique experience for the runners. The answer came in the form of a nudge from the special events team from Miami Beach. They asked us if we would be willing to stage an event in the newly renovated South Pointe Park in October. The light bulb in our heads lit up once the October timeframe came into play…. Halloween! Even as adults, when the calendar turns the page to October, Halloween comes to mind. The marriage of Halloween, costume themes, and a running event quickly came together! From the outset we decided that each year would feature a different traditional Halloween character. The artwork for the event, the medals, and the shirt would incorporate the Halloween character. To date we have used bats, vampires, skeletons, zombies, and werewolves. We are starting to run out of traditional Halloween characters! The Miami Beach Halloween Half Marathon & Freaky 4-Miler is a costume and Halloween themed event that adds a unique twist to the traditional running event. Our event celebrates all things Halloween! We encourage our participants to come dressed in the costume of your choice! Each year most of the runners & walkers tackle the 13.1 or 4 mile courses decked out in full costume! Some of the more popular costume category themes that we have seen include Superheros, Villans, Funny, Scary, body paint, animals, etc. If you are new to running or prefer walking, then the Freaky 4-Miler is perfect for you!We cannot guarantee that you will achieve your personal best time, but we will ensure that you have a good time! All finishers receive a signature Halloween themed medal. Our event is known for us its top notch medals!
Course details
The course for the race starts at Jungle Island on the western side of the bay and takes runners on a quick loop along Highway 41 to the northwestern corner of Watson Island, and then turns around just before runners are about to reach the bridge and back eastward across the bay over the Macarthur Causeway to Miami Beach.Once over the causeway, runners then turn right onto the Bay Walk Esplanade that parallels Alton Road and head toward South Point Park, the southernmost point of Miami Beach. After making the turn around the park, runners then head onto Continuum Drive and then onto Ocean Drive, which takes them northward to Lummus Park, where they connect with both the Serpentine Walk Esplanade and the Beach Walk Esplanade, a winding pathway along the beach that they’ll take all the way north to 24th Street, and on past to the race turnaround point, near the famed Miami Beach boardwalk. From there, runners then head back southward along the route they’ve just run until they reach 17th Street, where they turn right and head west to James Street, turning south there and then again onto Lincoln Road. The course follows Lincoln all the way until runners hit the fountains on Lenox Avenue, where they turn around and head back toward the beach, crossing Collins to the beach walkway.Runners then follow the walkway back down to Lummus Park and then re-connect with Ocean Drive, which they take all the way back to the race finish line near the fountains just west of South Point Park.
