Course details
Marathon Looking for a marathon PB, then this is it. This flat scenic course will traverse the Newcastle Harbour and Carrington basin. Starting on Wharf Rd, Queen Wharf the course will run east along wharf Rd and past Nobbys, towards Newcastle Baths. The course does not go onto the Breakwall. Marathon runners will stay on the city side of Shortland Esplanade. At the gate of Newcastle Baths runners will turn and head back to Queens Wharf and run toward Argyle St. At Argyle St they will enter the Honeysuckle Broad Walk and follow this along the Harbour’s edge until Worth Place. For 2019, due to construction work, they will divert to run west along the Honeysuckle Drive footpath and then back onto the Foreshore at a marshal point. Runners will then follow the footpath past the Marina and behind the Fish Co-op to join the footpath along Throsby Creek, over the bridge and around to the rowing club. Runners then return to Queens Wharf. This is one lap. You must complete 3 laps. Relay team members will tag their team member and continue. The course is 50% on closed roads and 50% on wide footpaths, where runners will have right of way. Marshals will monitor high traffic areas. Do not be surprised by the elevation map. This course is flat the whole way. There will be timing check points at both turns and the start/lap area.Half MarathonStarting from Queens Wharf the course is essentially the 10km Hill to Harbour Course in reverse to get to Bar Beach and then the 10km Hill to Harbour course from Bar Beach. The additional 1.1km is achieved at the start of the event by running 550m on Wharf Rd east toward Nobbys Beach and then turning and coming back to the start line. From that point you have exactly 20km to run. The start and the finish line are parallel, with the start on the road . The Hill to Harbour course is below, and it makes more sense to explain this course, than explaining the out and back sections. Note that the only section that is different to the main regular course is that we are now back on the south Newcastle Beach cliff and we will also run onto the new footpath at Newcastle Beach to allow East end traffic ot exit. This is impossible to avoid give Light Rail construction. All sections that may seem complicated due to the construction works will be fenced and marshaled so they will be simple to navigate at your blistering pace!!Hill to Harbour 10km from Bar Beach Starting from Empire Park just up the road from the famous Merewether Beach break, the event lines up on Memorial Drive just past the Cooks Hill Surf Club and runs straight up towards the Strzelecki lookout. It climbs for 1.8km and then levels out to heads down- hill, entering beautiful King Edward Park. Winding through the Park, the run heads to the middle entry past the famous 530 runners drink station where it heads down the old road into the Gardens and then down past the south Newcastle cliff and past the skate park then up to the intersection with Shortland Explanade. At this point (*due to the Light rail construction we will run onto the footpaths for 400m and then rejoin the road north of Zarra St. (This is to allow residents to exit and enter the east end of Newcastle). The course then passes some classic Newcastle café’s, hotels and then past the historic Newcastle Ocean Baths. The course then approaches Nobby’s Beach (home of the Pasha Bulka for a while) turns right at the Nobby’s Surf Club House and towards the Macquarie Pier, better known as Nobby’s Break-wall. It is then an out and back run of 3km and back to the surf club for a stroll down the Wharf Rd passing Customs House, old Newcastle Rail Station, Harry’s Café D Wheels and the Queens Wharf complex. Turning right the course then heads into the Honeysuckle area for a out and back section to Worth Place right next to the Harbour and then returns to Market St Lawns opposite Queens Wharf and a great spectator crowd ready to bring you home. Newcastle Herald Hill to Harbour touches much of what Novocastians love about Newcastle.Forts5 - 5kmThe course starts from Queens Wharf and runs East along Wharf Rd until just before Nobbys and turns left into the new Camp Shortland ‘Super Cars” track. The course follows the track around and then back to the Nobbys roundabout . Runners will turn around the roundabout and run back to Queens Wharf where they continue west to Argyle St and then enter the Honeysuckle foreshore and run to a turn point near Worth Place. They then return along Honeysuckle foreshore and back to the finish line on Wharf Rd opposite Queens Wharf. The course is very flat and very fast.2k4KIDSThis event will be an approx 2km run from Queens Wharf on Wharf Rd east until Watt St Roundabout then return to run past Queens Wharf until a turn point at Argyle St and back, finishing in the big finish chute to a massive spectator crowd. There is great access for family and friends to cheer the children along. There is no map available for this course.
