The Sanlam Cape Town marathon (42.2km) is a prestigious global city race open to a range of running enthusiasts from elite athletes to social runners.  Along the spectacular route, you will take in the famous natural beauty of Cape Town’s mountains and sea, as well as many of the city’s great attractions.Running the marathon is unique way to experience the gorgeous highlights and the vibrant spirit of one of Africa’s most visited and most celebrated city.  It is an ideal race both for athletes who aim to achieve fast times, and for first-timers who want to finish their inaugural marathon.  The route is wheelchair-friendly, and the 7 hour cut-off time can accommodate the social runner. The Cape Town Marathon was established in 2007 with the intention of developing a marathon which will improve South African and Cape Town marathon running and which will showcase the City of Cape Town.You will experience the vibe, smell the sea and hear the sounds of Cape Town along the Fanwalk and the Sea Point Beach Front. Experience the views of the Twelve Apostles, the Atlantic Ocean and Robben Island before you turn back toward the Mouille Point Lighthouse and the head towards the Cape Town Stadium. The marathon finishes under the majestic backdrop of Table Mountain at the Green Point A track.

The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon is one of the world’s irresistible Gold Label City Marathons. Experience the route of Africa’s extraordinary Mother City as you rise to the heroic challenge of athletics most celebrated race – the classic Olympic distance of 42.2 km.The race starts at the world famed tourist destination the V&A Waterfront. It follows trendy Mouille-Point Beach-front into Cape Town’s City Centre, and past her historical landmarks of Long Street, Mount Nelson Hotel, South African National Gallery, South African Holocaust Museum, St Mary’s Cathedral, Houses of Parliament, City Gardens, City Hall, and the Castle of Good Hope to mention a few.You leave the City, heading towards the leafy Southern Suburbs, under the gaze of majestic Table Mountain. Be sure to enjoy the iconic Groote Schuur Hospital, world-ranked University of Cape Town, President’s Groote Schuur Residence, Newlands Test Cricket ground, and historic Rondebosch Common.Turning back to the City alongside the Liesbeek River, you enter the vibrant, eclectic suburb of Woodstock. This affords you incredible panoramic views of Table Mountain as you journey back to the City Centre.The city is now awake, and you experience her unique rhythm, the salty sea smell, the incredible Capetonian support as you run along the World Cup 2010 Fanwalk towards the Cape Town Stadium. Your 42,2 km journey of the Mother City ends in the shadow of Signal Hill at Green Point A track where 1000’s of spectators, runners and entertainers merge into a carnival of food, drink and celebration.

What's included

The route showcases the mountain, the sea, and all the major attractions of Cape Town. After the start in Cape Town's city centre the marathon route takes runners out to Rondebosch before looping back to the City via the V&A Waterfront, Sea Point the Green Point Common and finishes in Vlei Road. You will struggle to find a more beautiful setting for a city marathon. Also runners will have the privilege to meander past some of the most Iconic Cape Town landmarks: the Castle of Good Hope, the Cape Town City Hall, the Houses of Parliament, the City Gardens, St Georges Cathedral, and the Nederduitse Kerk to mention but a few.

If you are coming to the event in your own vehicle, please allow enough time (cater for heavy traffic in the area), please do not park illegally and ensure that you have a plan as to where you will park. The Traffic Police will enforce the law and will issue fines, and may possibly tow away vehicles that are illegally parked.
